Exploiting architectural principles of tissues and organelles for the design of next generation therapeutics

Abstract

Illuminating architectural principles of passive cellular connective tissues alongside dynamic molecular machines, led to the design of next generation, eco-friendly antibiotics as well as a unique mRNA-collagen construct for controllable protein synthesis. In parallel, structural analyses of diseases associated genetically mutated ribosomes, as well as of marginally modified collagen molecules, shed light on specific biological pathways and provided hints for novel therapeutical platforms.

Short Bio

Ada Yonath was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 alongside Thomas Steitz and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome." She has held positions at the Wiezmann Institute of Science for most of her career to date, but also worked at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and served as a post-doctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
